When should you start buying things for the baby?

The excitement of a baby's arrival can make us want to start getting everything ready as soon as we hear the news. However, it’s important to consider the right time to start buying things for the baby. Here’s a guide to help you decide when to start shopping, based on which trimester of pregnancy you’re in.

First purchases for the baby: First trimester (0-3 months)

During the first trimester, it’s essential to focus on the mother’s health and the baby’s development. Although the temptation to buy things for the baby can be strong, it’s a good idea to focus on things like medical checkups, prenatal vitamins, and getting emotionally ready to welcome the new member of the family.

However, if you’re eager to start shopping, you could consider buying books about baby care or parenting magazines, or even start researching the different options for strollers, cots, and other baby essentials.

It’s common to give in to temptation and let your excitement inspire you to make your first purchases for your baby. In that case, we recommend buying something small, such as clothes, bodysuits, pajamas, etc. Always remember to consider the time of year your baby is due, so you can buy clothes that are suitable for the temperature during that season.

Second trimester (4-6 months)

During the second trimester, many women experience a boost in their energy and fewer of the discomforts associated with the first trimester. This can be a good time to start buying more specific items for the baby.

Some of the first purchases you might consider during this period:

• Baby stroller: Choose the model that best suits your needs. We recommend taking a look at the Guide to choosing a stroller for your baby.

• Baby car seat: Keep in mind that you’ll need to have it installed before you leave the hospital, so the second trimester is a good time to research and buy a car seat for your baby.

•Cot or bassinet:  You’ll need to decide where the baby will sleep and whether, for example, you want a co-sleeping cot to co-sleep with your baby and discover the benefits of sleeping alongside them.

• Baby bathtub: Bath time is important, so choose a baby bathtub that is safe and comfortable for both you and your baby.

•Baby bouncer: There’s a wide range of baby bouncers available, including folding, electronic, and wooden models. Choose the one you like best and that suits your needs.

• Changing mat: You’ll change your baby’s diaper several times a day during the first few months, so we recommend finding a comfortable place to change them.

Third trimester (7-9 months)

During the third trimester, many women feel an urgency to finish getting everything ready for the baby’s arrival. From the seventh month onward, it’s a good idea to have all the baby’s essentials ready, as well as to pack your hospital bag and prepare for your little one’s arrival.

Some of the purchases you can make during this period include:

Diapers and wet wipes: Although you won’t use them until after the birth, it’s a good idea to have a supply ready.

Hygiene products: shampoo, soap, diaper cream, etc.

Feeding: If you’ve decided to breastfeed, we recommend getting a breast pump. If you plan to feed your baby with a baby bottle, it’s a good idea to get a few that are suitable for newborns. Also remember how important it is to sterilize them with a good sterilizer.

Although most baby products are bought before the baby is born, you’ll also have some new needs during the first few months after the baby arrives. Here are some of them:

• High chair: You’ll need one when your baby is ready to start complementary feeding, usually around 6 months, when they’re able to sit up on their own.

• Feeding utensils: When your baby starts eating, you’ll need various products, such as tableware designed for babies, a BLW plate, spoon, thermos, etc.

• Larger-size clothes: Your baby will grow quickly, so we recommend planning ahead and buying clothes for the coming months.

• Toys: Look for toys that are safe and, just as importantly, stimulate your baby’s development.

• Books for babies: Remember that the first months and years of life lay the foundations for your baby’s development in every way, so reading to them is a wonderful way to encourage their language development.

Keep in mind that when your baby arrives, you’ll also receive lots of gifts for the baby, so you may not need to buy everything. This guide will also help you make a list of what you need and guide family and friends who want to celebrate your baby’s arrival with a gift.

Remember that every pregnancy is unique and there’s no exact time to start buying things for the baby. The most important thing is to trust your instincts and shop at a pace that feels comfortable and right for you and your family. Above all, enjoy this exciting and special time!
